The International Day for Biological Diversity-2013 was celebrated by Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board, Itanagar with the financial support from National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai. The programmes conducted as a part of celebration were as follows;
1. Painting Competition among student:
A painting competition on the theme “Water and Biodiversity” was conducted among School children at Guardian Angel School, Itanagar on 18th of May, 2013. Around 150 students participated in the competition. The student was divided into junior and senior groups. The junior group comprised of student of class V and VI and the senior group from class VII to IX. The winners of the competition were awarded with certificate and prizes on 22nd May, 2013.
2. Popular talk series:
A popular talk series on the theme “Water and Biodiversity” was organized as a part of the celebration on 22nd May, 2013 at State Forest Research Institute, Itanagar. The Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh Shri H.K. Paliwal attended the programme as Chief Guest. PCCF and Principal Secretary, Environment and Forests, Shri D.V. Negi, PCCF (Wild Life and Biodiversity) Shri N.N. Zhasa, Senior Forest officials of the State, Board Member of State Biodiversity Board, faculty from Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Itanagar, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Nirjuli, Itanagar, Scientist from BSI, SFRI, faculty from state Colleges, BMC Members and school children attended the programme.
In the popular talk series, Prof. D.N. Das, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, presented a talk on the “Inland Water and Biodiversity”. He presented the existing status of aquatic resources of Arunachal Pradesh. His lecture emphasized on the aquatic bioresources documented from the state. Prof M.L. Khan, Professor, Department of Forestry, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Nirjuli, Itanagar, presented on “Biodiversity loss and water crisis”. He opined the principle of Water for life, life for water. Dr. P. Satyanarayana, Scientist-D, and Head of office, Botanical Survey of India presented on “Water and Biodiversity”. His talk concentrated on the relation of water and life on earth for survival.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri H.K. Paliwal, Chief Secretary emphasized on conservation of biodiversity for quality water. He also said that development should not be hampered for want of forest clearance but suitable compensatory plantation in lieu of forest areas diverted. PCCF and Principal Secretary Environment and Forests, Shri D.V. Negi while giving key note address of the popular talk series stated that Water is directly proportional to Biodiversity. Without water life cannot sustain and thus the biodiversity.The Biodiversity Management Committee members participating in the celebration discussed on various steps to be undertaken by the BMC with the support of the Board. Prizes to the winners of the school children painting competition was also given away by the Chief Guest.
3. Printing of Booklet:
A booklet entitled “A good practice guide Drinking water, Biodiversity and development” published by CBD was reprinted by the Board and distributed to the participants of the celebration.
4. Preparation of Biodiversity sticker:
Four stickers representing Biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh was published by the Board as a part of the celebration. The stickers showcase the great Indian Hornbill, Barking deer, Arunachal Macaque and Mithun with a slogan for its conservation. Stickers were released on 22nd of May, 2013.
5. Display of Banner and poster:
Posters on Biodiversity of the state displayed during COP-11 at Hyderabad were re-printed and displayed for public on the occasion of celebration at State Forest Research Institute, Itanagar. Banners displaying slogan on Biodiversity conservation were displayed in public places at Itanagar, Naharlagun and Nirjuli from 17th of May, 2013.
6. Plantation programme
Plantation programme was also organized in State Forest Research Institute, Itanagar campus on 22nd May, 2013. The programme was unveiled by the Chief Secretary of the State in the presence of PCCF and senior forest officials.
