The International Day for Biological Diversity, 2016 was celebrated by Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board, Itanagar at Doji, West Siang District. The Biodiversity Management Committee, Doji was the host of the celebration. More than 300 participants from 12 villages attended the programme. The Programme was graced by Sri Doi Ado, Former Cabinet Minister, Government of Arunachal Pradesh as Chief Guest. He exhorted the participants to be the fore-runners in protecting nature and create awareness amongst the public about the importance of maintaining balance between man and nature. The Biodiversity Management Committees of the district, Panchayat representatives, School Children, NGO representatives and officers from the line Department also participated.
After the awareness lecture series, Group discussion on the issues related to the Biodiversity conservation, Sustainable utilization of wild bioresource and Biodiversity conservation was held. The BMC, Panchayat representatives and NGOs of 12 villages participated in the discussion session. Mr. Kenbom Bagra, Advocate and a social activist narrated the role played by West Siang District Socio Culture and Economic Development Society in regulating the banning of destructive fishing activities in Aalo region of the district. He requested APBB to instruct the district administration to implement the Wildlife laws strictly. The representatives of participating villages express their views on promoting traditional means of Biodiversity conservation. They urge the APBB to constitute BMC in every village of Pushi Bango (the local administrative circle). They also agreed to joint hand to hand to work on the issue concerning biodiversity. All the speakers discourage the use of insecticides, weedicides and other harmful chemicals in farming system and requested the authority to prohibit the selling of the same in the local market.
Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board prepared a Pamphlet entitle “Protected Areas in Arunachal Pradesh” for the International Day for Biological Diversity 2016 celebration. The pamphlet contains the information on the Biosphere Reserve, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in the State. The pamphlets along with other reading materials were distributed to the participants of the programme.
